Play-Doh was invented in 1956 by a soap salesman named Noah McVicker. He was working for the Kutol Products Company, which sold a wallpaper cleaner called Kutol Doh. McVicker mixed together some of the cleaner with cornstarch and water to create the first batch of Play-Doh. The company’s owner, Cleo McVicker, liked it so much that he gave it to his son as a Christmas present. Cleo changed the name from Kutol Doh to Play-Doh to make it sound more fun. In 1966, Milton Levine became the company’s director of marketing. He came up with a mascot for Play-Doh and designed a logo for them which featured an orange piece of Play-Doh with tongs and a smile. This logo is still used today on their products. In 1969, McVicker retired from the business in order to dedicate time to his family.
